The Impact of Local Volunteering in Leicester Make a Difference Today

Throughout August we are running our Community Cheerleader campaign.

It’s where we shout from the rooftops (and blog posts) about the importance of supporting our neighbourhood together.

Here’s part two of our five-part series, which looks at volunteering.

Volunteering is a powerful way to give back to your community, meet new people and change people’s lives.

Here’s why volunteering locally is so important, as well as some ideas on getting involved.

1. Builds Community Spirit

Volunteering helps foster community spirit. Volunteers build stronger relationships with their neighbours and create a more cohesive and supportive environment by working together towards a common goal.

2. Supports Local Needs

Local charities and community organisations often rely on volunteers to deliver their services. By offering your time, you directly support the essential services that improve the lives of those in your community, whether helping older people, supporting schools or cleaning up local parks.

3. Personal Growth and Fulfilment

Volunteering can be immensely rewarding on a personal level. It’s also a great way to learn new skills, gain experience and boost confidence. Additionally, helping others has been shown to improve mental health by reducing stress and depression.

4. The Ripple Effect

When you volunteer, you set a positive example for others. Your actions can inspire friends and family to get involved, creating a ripple effect of goodwill and community spirit.

5. Enhances Job Prospects

Volunteering can boost your CV, providing evidence of your dedication and community involvement. It can also help you develop useful contacts, which might lead to new career opportunities.

Ideas for Volunteering Locally

1. Support Local Charities

Local charities often need volunteers to help with fundraising events, administrative tasks and outreach programmes.

2. Help at Schools

Schools often seek volunteers to assist with reading programmes, extracurricular activities and events.

3. Join Environmental Groups

If you’re passionate about the environment, consider volunteering with local conservation groups or community gardens.

4. Assist in Care Homes

Volunteering at care homes can be incredibly fulfilling. Many elderly residents appreciate companionship, assistance with activities and someone to talk to.

5. Coach Youth Sports

Mentor the next generation of sporting heroes by coaching a local youth team.

But where can you seek out volunteering opportunities?

Search online to see if any voluntary groups catch your eye.

Also, check the council’s website, local sports clubs and social media groups for ways to get involved.

Here’s to being a Community Cheerleader and giving back to the places we call home.
