Weighing Up Food and Rent…

£4,753 is the total amount an average household spends on food and non-alcoholic drinks per year, the equivalent to 20 weeks’ average rent.

Whether it’s cereal, sandwiches, roast dinner, cream tea, fish and chips, curry or fine dining, what we eat and where we eat it makes quite a dent in household expenditure. The average household spends £91 per week on groceries and eating out, food accounting for a sizeable 16% of total household expenditure.

Across the North East, East Midlands, Wales and Yorkshire and the Humber, the total food bill equates to over 30 weeks of average rent, while in London it’s the equivalent to just 11.
